Are Beans and Legumes Healthy?

There many health benefits to eating beans and legumes. This week, Mint Nutrition Clinic is focusing on beans and legumes, and all of their health benefits.

Health Benefits of Beans and legumes

Beans and legumes have many healthy traits. For instance, they contain a high amount of soluble fiber. This helps the food in the GI tract form into a gel, slowing the release of its sugars (and reducing insulin levels after a meal). This fiber benefit has been shown to improve satiety (to make us feel fuller for longer), and weight loss results.

Also, beans and legumes are full of vitamins and minerals. Therefore, they are an inexpensive option for protein and lots of other nutrients. For example, rice and beans contain all the protein (amino acids) that are bodies need, since our bodies cannot make certain amino acids.

Therefore, at our clinic, we regularly recommend eating beans and legumes, as a part of a balanced diet, at least 3 times a week. Remember, 1 cup of beans usually has about 200 calories.
