There are many different types of vegetarian dishes that are enjoyed around the world, and tofu (and other soybean products) are one of them. This week, Mint Nutrition Clinic is talking all about soybeans and tofu and whether or not they are a healthy food option.
Tofu and Soybeans
Tofu is a soybean product and it is made from soy milk. It is a vegetarian option for protein and other nutrients. Since tofu is very tasteless, it can be marinated in many different ways and enjoyed without that much effort.
Tofu is a great source of protein, calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients that are usually present in animal products. One cup of cooked tofu has about 200 calories. Therefore it can be a great low-calorie recipe for a weeknight.
Many studies have associated tofu with a reduced risk of developing diabetes and heart disease, and it has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol.
At our nutrition clinic, we always recommend one dinner per week to be tofu. There are many healthy recipes that are available online to help individuals cook tofu. One cup of tofu for dinner is a great vegetarian dish.
