Why Are Lentils Healthy?

Lentils are a part of the beans/legume family and they are super-foods that are cheap and easy to eat. This week, Mint Nutrition Clinic and our nutritionists and registered dietitians are talking all about lentils and their health benefits, and why they should be enjoyed on a regular basis.

Lentils Are Very Healthy

Lentils are full of fibre and protein, and they don't have a lot of calories (Eatright Ontario, 2012). They also contain, folate, potassium, and iron. Since they have fibre and protein, they help us feel fuller for longer. Therefore, we tend to eat less food and calories, after eating lentils or other fibre/protein rich foods.

They are also very cheap and easy to prepare. Many recipes and cuisines feature lentils. However, canned lentils may have added salt; therefore, they should be rinsed well before use. Overall, we recommend eating lentils on a regular basis. 3/4 of a cup of lentils is one serving and that's about 200 calories.
